Procedure
1. Microsoft 365 Prerequisites
First, make the required configuration changes to begin using Access Control with your Microsoft 365 environment.
Prepare a Microsoft 365 Global Admin account and complete all four of the following settings.
-
Change the default domain for Microsoft 365
To enable Microsoft 365 authentication through Access Control (enable federation), change the default Microsoft 365 domain to "onmicrosoft.com". -
Regarding the "Always Connect to Outlook" Feature in Outlook on the Web
If this feature is enabled, access from unauthorized environments may remain possible even after federation, so disable it. -
[Access Control] How to Check the Status of Modern Authentication Enablement for Exchange Online
This procedure checks the modern authentication enablement status required for access control to function properly. -
[Access Control] Change the UPN of non-user objects to the onmicrosoft.com domain
This procedure prevents non-user objects in the Microsoft 365 Tenant, such as meeting rooms, equipment, and shared mailboxes, from being managed by Access Control.
2. Access Control Policy Settings
Starting in March 2026, Access Control has begun offering a new Login screen.
If you subscribed to HENNGE One before the date above, complete the following Procedure before starting the subsequent steps.
[Access Control] Migration Procedure to the New Login Screen
Configure access policies (access permission conditions) for logging in to single sign-on services from Access Control. Also configure the Password policy for the entire Tenant.
※Complete this procedure using an account with Access Control Global Admin privileges.
-
Review access policies
Select the requirements you want to configure from the access control patterns in the table below.
If you want to configure an access control method other than the patterns below, Search for separate procedures in the Help Center or contact your implementation representative.
-
[Access Control] Define Access policy groups and Access policy templates
Configure the selected policies. -
Password-related settings (Modern View)
Configure the Password policy.
3. User Registration and Synchronization
The procedure differs depending on whether Users are synchronized from Active Directory or created in Access Control. Review the applicable procedure before proceeding.
When creating Users in Access Control
Complete this procedure using an account with Access Control Global Admin privileges.
-
Bulk User Registration/Update/Deletion (Modern View)
To use Access Control, create Users in Access Control that are linked one-to-one with Users in Microsoft 365. -
[Access Control] User Sync Settings (Access Control → Microsoft 365)
After User registration is complete, configure Periodical Sync for User information to ensure that the information for Users created in Access Control always matches the information for the linked Users in Microsoft 365.
※To prevent unintended User Deletion or changes, be sure to review the Notes in the article above before Synchronization.
After configuring Periodical Sync for Users, User information in Access Control will be overwritten and synchronized to Microsoft 365 every hour. The User management methods after configuration are as follows.
-
When you want to create a new User:
Create the User in Access Control. The User will also be created in Microsoft 365 when Synchronization is executed.
-
When you want to Update User information (Family name, Given name, Name, UPN, etc.):
Update the User information in Access Control. When Synchronization is executed, the information for the linked User in Microsoft 365 (the User with the matching UPN) will be overwritten and updated.
-
When you want to delete an existing User:
Delete the User in Access Control. When Synchronization is executed, the linked User in Microsoft 365 (the User with the matching UPN) will be deleted.
When synchronizing from Active Directory
This procedure is performed using an account with Access Control Global Admin privileges and a Windows account with Active Directory administrator privileges.
Synchronize User information from Active Directory to Access Control and create Users in Access Control.
-
Define Synchronization Conditions and Receive the File
Define the configuration values for the HENNGE Directory Sync Tool synchronization configuration file used for Active Directory Synchronization, and receive the configuration file from HENNGE. -
Organize and prepare users on Active Directory
Organize Users on Active Directory, such as by placing the Users to be synchronized in the security group or OU specified in the synchronization configuration file. -
How to install HDEPasswordFilter.dll on Active Directory (WS 2016 or later)
This procedure installs the DLL file, which is one of the configuration files required to perform Active Directory Synchronization, on all Domain Controllers. -
Restart the Domain Controllers
Restart all Domain Controllers to apply the configuration file.
※ Please perform this procedure with attention to its impact on operations, including the implementation time. -
Change Passwords for Users to Be Synchronized on Active Directory
Please have each end user or an Admin Change Passwords for all Users to be synchronized once.
※ Procedure steps 6 through 10 can be performed without waiting for all Users to complete their Password changes. -
Install Microsoft Entra Connect (External Link)
Microsoft Entra Connect from Microsoft is used for Synchronization between AD and Microsoft 365 (Microsoft Entra ID). If it has not been configured, install Microsoft Entra Connect according to Microsoft's manual.
※ We are unable to answer questions regarding the installation and configuration of Microsoft Entra Connect. Please contact Microsoft. -

4. Admin and End User Procedures Based on Access Policies
Based on your access control requirements, please review the implementation procedures for the applicable features.
Perform the procedures in this section only when configuring access policies that use the respective features.
Click the feature you want to use and perform the procedure.
Distribute the certificate
Issue the Device Certificates in the Access Control Administration. Once the issued Certificate has been installed on the end user's device, preparation for using the Device Certificates is complete.
-
HENNGE Device Certificate Device Information Gathering
Collect the Device ID (a unique Value that differs for each device) of Devices targeted for Device Certificate distribution. -
[Device Certificate] Issuing a Device Certificate
This procedure distributes Device Certificates to end user devices.
When an Admin issues a Device Certificate, an email prompting the end user to install the Certificate is sent. -
How to Install HENNGE Device Certificate?
This procedure installs Device Certificates on end user devices.
※ This procedure must be performed on the end user's device.
OTP(One-Time Password) Configuration
Even when using OTP(One-Time Password), you may skip this procedure if any of the following apply.
※ A registration screen will be displayed during the initial Login.
・Accounts with Access Control Admin privileges
・Users assigned to an Access policy group that requires OTP
-
[Access Control] Configuration for Receiving OTP (One-Time Password) via Connected Application
Install the dedicated Connected Application and configure OTP receipt settings.
※ This task must be performed on the end user's device.
OTP can be received on only one device per User.
When issuing OTPs to Users who use Access Control in a Shared manner, you can also configure OTP receipt by Email Address instead of through a Connected Application, allowing multiple people to receive OTPs.

With the procedures up to this point, all configuration required before beginning Access Control operations is complete.
In the next procedure, you will test the operation of the Access policy configured before beginning operations.
5. Assigning Access Policies and Testing Operation
-
Assign Access Policy Group to Users (Modern View)
Assign Access policies to the Users created in Access Control. -
Perform Access Policy Group Operation Test (Modern View)
After completing the Access policy assignment, log in to the Access Control User screen as the Target User and test whether access control functions as expected.
After the operation test is complete, configure single sign-on(Federate)with Microsoft 365 in the next procedure and begin operations.
6. Configuring Single Sign-On
When you perform this procedure, authentication for General Users logging in to Microsoft 365 will switch to Access Control. Please carefully coordinate the timing of this procedure, such as by avoiding business hours.
-
[Access Control] Federation Connection Process with Microsoft 365
Establish a single sign-on(Federate)Connection between Microsoft 365 and Access Control, then begin production operations. -
